With gas prices rising, and with recession-minded buyers downsizing, the C-segment has suddenly become quite competitive. And for the first time in a long time, American automakers are bringing competitive products to the mix.
A great example of this is the redesigned 2012 Ford Focus. The last Ford Focus was an unloved little sedan that seemed to fit right in with the nation's rental car fleets. Contrast that to the new Focus, which has European roots and a rally-inspired theme. Unlike the outgoing model, this Focus actually inspires desire. But more on that later.
Ford is in the midst of a product offensive that started in 2009 with the 2010 Ford Fusion. A new Mustang followed for 2011, as did the subcompact Fiesta. The F-150 pickup got made over, and the 2011 Ford Explorer transformed from a body-on-frame dinosaur to a unibody SUV with a car-like ride. The Ford Edge crossover got updated as well, and the Transit Connect bowed on American shores. Ford showrooms look much different than they did just a few years ago.
