The 9th annual edition of the La Jolla Concours d'Elegance held on Sunday, April 7th got the West Coast concours season into second , this following last month's East Coast event at Amelia Island. The event presented 150+ prewar and postwar classics from the US and the great European marques with a rare Toyota Sports 800 roadster thrown in for good measure.

Among the prewar American classics, the crowd favorite was Tom M. White's creamy yellow 1937 Cord supercharged phaeton (page 12), a car once owned by cowboy movie star Tom Mix. It stood out in the predominantly dark-hued prewar field among cars like Donnie Crevier and Larry Alderson's 1931 Chrysler Imperial Waterhouse (page 8).

British cars were well represented. In addition to the expected onslaught of Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, and Jaguars, four cars rarely seen in the US caught our eyes. First was Malcolm Page's 1928 Aston Martin Type-T convertible (page 5). Next were two Sunbeams, Ed Stewart's 1953 Sunbeam Talbot Mk II A saloon (page 21) along with Dannie and Craig McLaughlin's 1953 Sunbeam Alpine MK 1 (page 21) looking as if it was just driven off the set of To Catch a Thief. And finally was Eric Hoover and Deborah Gator's 1968 Triumph TR5 PI (page 36). And we would be remiss if we didn't mention the 1964 Triumph Spitfire (page 32) owned by Harry Connally that was sheer perfection that was recognized by the judges with a class win.

From the continent were a strong representation of cars from Germany, Italy, France, and Spain. The strong Porsche contingent was led by Beverly and Tom Gould's 1970 Porsche 911E Targa (page 37). Among the Mercedes-Benz cars on
