order was given to cut the chassis into two pieces and scrap it.
Forty years later, in 2006, the family who owned the scrap yard to which GT/111 had been sent by FAV in 1966 revealed that they had instead chosen to retain the two chassis sections in storage for all these years, rather than simply destroy them. This great foresight on their part not only prevented the loss of an exceedingly historic prototype, but caused great interest amongst historic collectors and the GT40 world when it was finally revealed that it had, in fact, been saved.
During 2006, prior to its sale and restoration, the chassis was independently inspected by both the FIA and, of course, world-renowned GT40 expert Ronnie Spain, both of whom fully authenticated it and confirmed it to be beyond doubt the original works prototype chassis--GT/111.
The chassis was then sold to its current owner, who commissioned specialist GT40 preparers Gelscoe Motorsport Limited to carry out a full and meticulous rebuild of GT/111 to original 1965 Targa Florio race specification. Upon completion, GT/111 debuted competitively again at the 2007 Goodwood Revival.
Subsequently, it has also raced in the 2007, 2008, and 2009 Spa 6 Hours, the 2008 Le Mans Classic, the 2009 Goodwood Revival Whitsun Trophy, achieving a podium finish, and the 2010 Masters Festival at Brands Hatch.
A very rare opportunity to acquire not only a genuine, works GT40 prototype but one of only four GT40 Roadsters to have survived. A hugely significant car of great importance and enormous historic value, we are proud to offer GT/111 for sale in race-ready condition, with U.K. title and HTP paperwork, together with a selection of valuable spares.
