with the extreme heat and the grueling 10-lap, 447-mile challenge. Having only been used for testing at Le Mans, GT/111 was selected and, within a month, it had been repainted at FAV into the present scheme of Linden Green and fitted with Hallibrand magnesium alloy wheels.

For the race, Sir John Whitmore was paired with American driver Bob Bondurant, both of whom had previous Targa Florio experience. Running against the highly competitive works 908/4 Porsches and a trio of Ferrari 275P2s, the GT40 ran well in the early stages and was up to third position. Disaster struck however on lap 8, when Bondurant hit some gravel and left the road. The car had hit a bridge parapet, damaging the front frame through the monocoque badly enough to force retirement.

Back at Slough, chassis GT/111 was inspected for crash damage and, although damaged, could have been repaired. Wyer and his engineers, however, had already decided that the way forward was to be with the closed GT40, so GT/111 was put aside into storage and gradually stripped of useable parts.
