Fourth and Labor Day, hoping to catch future cars undergoing testing for the spy photograph section of AutomotiveTraveler.com. It's a 600-mile crap shoot. I never know quite what to expect. This holiday weekend, I had hopes of catching some upcoming Camaro variants and such high-profile performance vehicles as the 500-horsepower 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.
Heading north on I-15, our first photo op was at the historic Summit Inn at the Cajon Pass, a Route 66 landmark. The Summit Inn is a car shooter's dream location. The restaurant itself is like a time capsule from the Forties. In the immediate post-War era, it was a final stop before heading down into the vast Los Angeles basin, where many families from the Midwest took advantage of the opportunities to start a new life.
Continuing north on U.S. 395, we caught sight of a 1962 Chevy drag wagon for sale and stopped by to check out the details. Many enthusiasts don't realize that station wagons were common on drag strips in the early Sixties. The wagons had better weight distribution than their sedan counterparts.
U.S. 395 is the main north-south highway leading up through the Sierras, frequented by skiers on their way to the Mammoth Mountain ski area and those heading to the casinos of Reno, Nevada. Although a scenic drive, it can be a bit boring after
