We drove next to the Castello Chiola in Loreto Aprutino, another historic property. Positioned in a commanding location overlooking the town, the castle dates to 864. In the course of its conversion, the central courtyard was turned into an atrium-like covered court that dominates the property. This provides an excellent location to relax... perhaps enjoying a glass of wine or cocktail at the adjacent bar. The Castello Chiola uses this wonderful space to host a number of events, from jazz concerts to art exhibitions.
Walking the perimeter of the property on a brisk September day, we couldn't help but notice the outdoor pool at rear of the castle facing the town. Known as the "Balcony of Abruzzo," the patio surrounding the pool provides a enchanting view of the town square and the surrounding countryside. It must be a delightful spot during the warmer summer months.
The attentive hotel staff gave us a tour of the castle's interior, including several of the rooms, most of which boasted high ceilings. After visiting the largest suite, Susan and I inquired about the price. When told it was less than 200 euros ($270), one of the costliest rooms in the region, we decided
