I arrived at the facility early to scout the location and take in the atmosphere. Things were not looking good--everyone seemed happy, working together harmoniously. The receptionist even offered to babysit my dogs. (I occasionally bring my dogs to a set if I can't find a sitter.)
I wandered into the warehouse, where I was introduced to Vic Edelbrock Jr. What a treat. I was going to be working with two celebrities that day. Perhaps tensions would run high between him and Dan Woods. I could only hope.
That hope was fruitless. I discovered the two knew each other well and greatly enjoyed each other's company. I was resigned to what was likely going to be another day of riveting television--without any temper tantrums.
We learned a great deal that day about how the famous E-Force Edelbrock supercharger is fabricated. We couldn't wait to see it installed on the GS, adding about 200 horsepower to an already powerful engine.
The Edelbrock factory is state of the art, of course. In the R&D department is a nifty device that measures dimensions accurately within a couple of micrometers, plotting those dimensions into a CAD program to permit the design of superchargers for all different vehicle makes, models, and years.
The result: Edelbrock superchargers are designed to be installed with minimal alterations to the engine or engine compartment.
I had attempted to interview one of the engineers (who shall remain unnamed), because I was fascinated by the R&D process. He was reticent but agreed to be interviewed on camera.
I asked the first question. He started to tense up. The words came out with increasing difficulty. I told him to relax, that we were "all friends here." I asked another question.
Stuttering. Sweating. It got to the point where he couldn't even tell me his name. He then said, "I can't do this," wiped the sweat off his face, got up from his chair, and walked out.
I turned around to tell my crew that we would move onto the next shot--and saw about 20 people, in addition to my crew, crammed in that little room. They had been staring at my subject, terrifying him into self-consciousness.
If I had had the foresight, I would have cleared the room, keeping only the essential people to get the shot.
