transmission. Jaguar's silky smooth 5.0L DOHC V8 takes charge, moving the two-ton vessel with an attitude that belies its mass.
That powerplant produces 385 horsepower in most models, but this particular XJL adds a supercharger that brings with it another 85 horsepower. Getting from a standstill to 60 takes less than five seconds--just four and a half, by some accounts! It seems to defy the laws of physics. Driving sanely, I even coaxed 20 miles from a gallon of gas in this beast.
Every interior amenity you expect in a Jaguar is here. Sumptuous leather wraps the passengers and driver in luxury and support. Climate controls both front and rear add to the comfort level. Surrounding this package, a band of wood sets off the two-tone trim.
Ahead of the driver is one of the best instrument clusters around. At 12.3 inches wide, this thin film transistor display emulates three analog gauges after a brief animated introduction from Jaguar's own leaper. Impressive detail creates the illusion of actual dials just the way a true driver's car should have.
The additional eight-inch touch screen in the center console controls the audio, climate, and navigation systems. Manual knobs for interior temperature and sound-system volume reduce distractions to the driver and add to the convenience of the overall interior design.
The added length of the "L" model goes almost entirely to the rear passenger area, where the legroom seeemingly stretches on for acres. While riders in the back might gripe about the high windows, you won't hear any complaints as they stretch out their legs for the ride.
Exiting that spacious rear seat or, if you're lucky enough, the driver's control center, you can look back at that modern design of this beautiful car. It's as grand a step as Jaguar has ever taken, and yet it's still obviously a Jaguar. For the lucky few who step up to the XJL, they are met with one of the finest luxury cars available. Power, poise, and pampering--nothing matches the full package as offered in the Jaguar XJL.
