buyers, especially taxi companies and police departments. While many taxi drivers shifted to more fuel-efficient vehicles such as minivans, the police departments of America loved their V8 engines and full-frame cars.

General Motors finally abandoned this market at the end of the 1996 model year, with the final Chevrolet Caprice rolling off the Arlington, Texas assembly line. Those in the criminal justice field not already embracing Ford were forced, many reluctantly, to shift from the bowtie to the blue oval.

Riding on the same basic platform as its 1978 redesign, the Ford Crown Victoria set a record of longevity few other cars have surpassed. The Model T's 19-year run pales in comparison to the Crown Vic, which, if human, could not only vote and drink but very nearly run for president.

Police departments and federal officers everywhere will mourn the date 15 September 2011, when the final Ford Crown Victoria rolled out of that Ontario plant. A sad day, indeed.
