Automotive Traveler Magazine: 2012 02 2012 Rancho Mirage Desert Classic Concours Page 2

Over its five-year history, the Desert Classic Concours has moved from venue to venue, upgrading the location and the field each time. Held in late February 2012 at the Westin Mission Hills Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage, it seems the event has found a permanent home.

Hosted by Motor Trend Radio host Ed Justice Jr., automotive author Matt Stone, and ABC7 automotive reporter Dave Kunz, the 2012 Desert Classic Concours was the culmination of a full week of automotive events held throughout the Coachella Valley. Activities included track events at Chuckwalla Raceway, a vintage car auction, and a driving tour through the valley during which concours entries were put through their paces.

The Best of Show winner seen on Page One was Don and Carol Murray's 1963 Ferrari 400 Superamerica, once owned by New York Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller. The runner-up, shown on this page, was a 1936 Delahaye 125 Competition owned by Ken and Ann Smith. The People's Choice winner was a bare-skinned 1959 Ferrari Testa Rossa owned by Peter Giacobbi. The show's most unusual entries? They included a 1949 Diamond T pickup owned by Michael McQueen and a 1987 Rolls-Royce Camargue retractable hardtop owned by the Calumet Collection.

The 2012 Desert Classic benefitted local nonprofits ACT for MS and Loving All Animals, as well as the FIND Food Bank and the Desert Classic Scholarship Fund. More information and details about the 2013 Desert Classic Concours are available online.
