2012 Hyundai Genesis

I encountered three of the mid-cycle refresh Genesis luxury sedans. Hyundai's current top U.S. model will get a nose job and a tummy tuck at the rear. Read about the shoot in Spied: 2012/13 Hyundai Accent/Verna, 2012 Hyundai Genesis, and Ram 1500 2-Mode Hybrid.

If you love classic, early four-cylinder Porsche 356s, Dana Point was the place to be this weekend

1962 Porsche 356 Convertible :: Owned by Danny McKenna Although I'm no Porsche expert, that's never stopped me from admiring them, especially the 356 line that came before the introduction of the now-iconic 911 in 1964. But the earlier 356 cars are iconic in their own way, too, as they established the marque in the aftermath of World War II. Part of West Germany's economic miracle, they paved the way for all the Porsches that followed.

On the grounds of the Lantern Bay Park in Dana Point yesterday, more than 200 Porsches were gathered. And when the judges' score sheets were tallied, it was Danny McKenna who walked away with the top three awards--Judges' Choice, People's Choice, and Best of Show--for his freshly restored, black 1962 356 convertible. The car scored 299.5 points out of a possible 300 overall. Congratulations to Danny.

Porsche 356 Carrera 2 :: With Picnic Display Of all the cars judged on the show field, several standouts caught my eye. As for my own personal choice for best of show, I'd have to name a late Carrera 2. While the car appeared to me to be perfect from every angle, what caught my eye, and probably influenced my vote, was its period-correct presentation... complete with a picnic ensemble and Coke-filled ice chest, matching luggage, and a Fifties-era Kodak Brownie camera.

As far as photography was concerned, the weather was perfect, with heavy overcast skies early in the morning giving way to bright sunshine as the 1:00 p.m. awards ceremony approached. If you love early Porsches, you'll want to check out the 250 photos from the 2010 Dana Point 356 Club Southern California Concours d'Elegance now available in the Automotive Traveler-Fotki Image Gallery. For information on the event itself, visit the 356 Club Southern California website.
